NESSA Team Racing - 2008

How to score a meet properly.

Scoring:

  1. For a meet to count, it must be a best of three or higher.
  2. If one team wins a majority of the races, then the meet is over and should be scored accordingly.

(ex: In a best of five meet, Team A beats Team B in the first three races, then the meet shall be scored Team A – 3, Team B – 0).

  1. If the coaches decide to sail additional races, then those races shall count too.

(ex: In a best of five series, Team C wins the first three races over Team D.  The coaches then decide to sail two more races, which the teams split.  The meet shall be scored Team C – 4, Team D – 1. In a best of five series, Team E wins the first three races over Team F.  The coaches then decide to sail four more races, which Team F wins.  The meet shall be scored Team F – 4, Team E – 3).

  1. In the event that the series finished with some of the races having unresolved protests, the coaches may chose to either (a) hear the protests and adjusts the results accordingly or (b) not hear the protest, in which case the results on the water stand

(Ex: In a best of fiver series, Team G wins the first, second, and fourth race.  Team H wins the third race but there is an outstanding protest.  Because the results from that protest will not affect the outcome of the meet, the coaches decide not to hear it.  The meet shall be scored Team G – 3, Team H – 1.  If the coaches decide to hear the protest and as a result Team H is scored DSQ and Team G ends up winning the race, then the meet shall be scored Team G – 4, Team H -0.

  1. Countable Meets:  Only a meet between two varsity teams shall be counted, unless it is between two varsity-B squads. (ex: If a Team-J uses a varsity-A against Team-K and their varsity-B group against Team-L, then the results from both meets are "countable.”  If Team-M’s varsity-A sails against Team-N’s varsity-A and Team-M’s varsity-B sails against Team-N’s varsity-B, then only the results from the varsity-A meet counts and should be recorded.

Unfinished meets:

1.      Three races are needed for a meet to be officially, unless it is scheduled for a best of three series before the start of the first race, and one team wins the first two races, making the third race unnecessary.

2.      In a best of five (or more) series, if the teams sail three races, and conditions prevent the finishing of the meet, then the meet is over and shall be scored as it stands.  If the teams did not sail 3 races, then the meet is cancelled, and if the two teams race again, they shall start the series over.

Cancellations and Forfeits:

1.      A meet may be cancelled:

a.       by an athletic director contacting another athletic director at any time.

b.      by mutual decision of the coaches.  In all but extreme cases, this shall be done based upon the prevailing conditions at the sailing site. Visiting coaches shall listen intently to the thoughts of the home coach concerning local weather conditions and the integrity of the equipment.

2.      A meet posted on the official team schedule submitted to NESSA for Team Racing New England’s (Mark Trophy) consideration that is not sailed will be considered a forfeit loss if the score is not posted or the meet was not cancelled using the criteria listed above.

3.      Due to the uncertainty surrounding the start of the season, meets forfeited before Friday April 7 will not count towards a school’s win total, but will count as a lose for the school that forfeits.

                                                               i.      One-third of the points are based upon winning percentage against NESSA schools

ii.      One-third of the points are based upon winning percentage against “top 20” NESSA schools in 2006

iii.      One-third of the points are based upon a “strength of schedule” formula that takes into account your opponent’s record and your opponent’s opponent’s record.

    1. Selection Committee Rankings: 50% of a school’s overall ranking will be tabulated by the combined rankings of the Selection Committee, which consists of the executive committee and three at-large members who are appointed by the NESSA president.  Members of the selection committee will rank all the schools that properly register from first to last. If there is a tie in rankings, then the selection committee ranking will break the tie.
